Everything You Need to Know to Participate in the ADA

This section outlines the rules, eligibility criteria, and voting process for the Assistant Director Awards (ADA). From how AD teams are nominated to how the winners are selected, here’s a detailed breakdown of how the ADA ensure a fair, transparent, and professional recognition of excellence in Assistant Directing.

Who will be awarded ?

Assistant Director teams will be recognized in two categories: Feature Film (including theatrical releases, streaming films, and TV movies) and TV Series.
In each category, three awards will be presented: Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

How does the nomination process work ?

To ensure fairness and objectivity in awarding prizes, the following eligibility rules apply:

    • Only films/series may be nominated if at least one member of an association worked as 1st or 2nd Assistant Director and demonstrated a substantial contribution to the project (excluding work limited to preparation only or short-term reinforcement).
    • The eligibility distribution period for nominated films for this year ADA runs from January 1st to December 31st of the previous year.
    • Nominations may only be submitted by the Associations.
    • Each Association has to provide up to 3 nominations before March 1st. Less than 3 nominations is also valid.
    • The nominated projects must have an international release or broadcast (broadcast in multiple countries and languages or screening at multiple international film festivals).
    • Each Association has to provide the ADAs with all the required information about their nominations.
    • Voting may only be done by eligible members of these Associations.
    • Voting has to be done in early April.

How does the voting process work ?

    • Each member of an association votes for its top 3 feature films and top 3 series, ranked in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
    • Only one vote per person (even if someone is a member of several associations/unions)
    • For each member’s vote, 5 points will be awarded for 1st place, 3 points for 2nd place, and 1 point for 3rd place.
    • To prevent bias from an association voting massively for a film on which one of its members worked, the point system is reduced by one point in such cases for 1st and 2nd places. Thus, we’ll have 4 points for rank #1, 2 points for rank #2, and still 1 point rank #3.
    • For each film and each association, the total raw points obtained will be calculated.
    • To ensure fairness and prevent bias—whether from a large number of voters from the same association favoring a particular feature film or series, or from an outsized influence of a small voting group—the raw points for each film will be adjusted using logarithmic weighting. This means the total points will be divided by the logarithm of the number of voters in each association, creating a balanced and equitable evaluation process.
    • If one member puts the same feature film/series on different ranks, only the one with the most points will be taken into account.

What is the “award” ?

The winning teams will receive a certificate and a trophy.

Afterwards, the teams are also invited to a public Q&A zoom call.
